Lead Agency

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA)

The FCEC is the core of the EPA’s Public Outreach and Education (PO&E) program outlined in the Institutional Controls Action Memorandum. FCEC is based on a pilot program conducted in 1999 to 2000 jointly by the California Department of Health Services and the EPA.

The goal of EPA’s Superfund Program for the Palos Verdes Shelf is to ensure protection of human health and the environment from the effects of the site-related contamination.
To accomplish this, EPA has several projects in progress:
• The Institutional Controls Program at the Palos Verdes Shelf, which comprises public outreach and education, fish monitoring and white croaker commercial catch ban area enforcement.
• EPA continues to evaluate methods for cleanup of the contaminated sediments.
