Located just a few minutes away from Los Angeles International (LAX) airport, the Redondo Beach Pier is a great destination for anglers and families alike as it offers a variety of oceanfront dining, fresh fish markets, bait cutting platforms, entertainment and shopping choices for all ages.
In 1995, the horseshoe shaped pier was introduced (its horseshoe shape explains why many locals call it the horseshoe pier.) However, what most people don’t know is that the Redondo pier is actually two piers. On the south end of the horseshoe pier is a smaller 300 foot long pier which is basically reserved for fishing – this is the Monstad Pier. The entire pier is 1550 feet long, but due to its shape, it does not reach out far into the ocean like other Southern California fishing piers. Although it may not be the longest pier in California, it is the largest “endless” pier on the California Coast.
Redondo Beach Pier is one of the best bonito spots because of the warm water outlet from the nearby power plant which keeps these particular fish species in the waterfront all year long. The typical catch found at this pier consists of halibut, pacific mackerel, sardines and of course bonito. Good sized sharks, guitarfish and bat rays are also fairly common even during the night hours. Although most anglers want to automatically fish the deepest water and cast out from the outer railings, don’t be afraid to try the inner waters, as many anglers find luck here. Throughout the fishing section of the pier are several bait cutting platforms located every few feet along the railing, making this pier very angler friendly.
The Redondo Beach Pier and parking lot are open to the public 24 hours per day, 7 days per week. Free public fishing is allowed in the designated areas of the southwest section of the pier. Like Belmont, Cabrillo, and Venice there is no fishing permit is required. While you venture to Redondo Pier for some quality pier fishing, you can enjoy a quick bite to eat with amazing views, live music almost any night of the week or find the perfect gift for someone special at the various unique shops.
