The Fish Contamination Education Collaborative (FCEC) educates and engages communities about the dangers of consuming contaminated fish

Through outreach to impacted communities, anglers and businesses, the FCEC provides education on the dangers of consuming contaminated fish, as well as recommended portioning and preparation guidelines.

Angler Outreach

FCEC outreach educators implement the FCEC’s angler outreach component. These partners educate pier and shoreline anglers in Los Angeles and Orange Counties on the risks of consuming DDT- and PCB-contaminated fish, particularly white croaker. The FCEC works to protect the public and support the angling community through these ongoing education efforts.

Community outreach

Community Outreach

The community outreach program builds local capacity to minimize exposure to contaminants in fish caught off the Los Angeles and Orange County coasts. The FCEC conducts family and community outreach in a variety of ways, including participating in community events and distributing multilingual educational materials to schools and health professionals. This outreach is conducted by the FCEC and its partners, including the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health.

Commercial outreach

Commercial Outreach

The purpose of commercial outreach is to prevent the sale of contaminated fish, identified as “Do Not Eat” species, in local markets and restaurants. The FCEC conducts regular outreach to these businesses to ensure that contaminated catch does not enter the food supply in Los Angeles and Orange Counties.
